Minecraft dev wins interim injunction in Bethesda battle

Bethesda's parent Zenimax has the right to appeal, but the Minecraft firm can continue to use the Scrolls name in the interim.

Minecraft developer Mojang today revealed it has been awarded an interim injunction in its legal dispute with Bethesda over use of the word "scrolls" as it relates to games.

Studio founder Marcus Persson, more commonly known as Notch, said via Twitter, "We won the interim injunction! We can keep using the name 'Scrolls.' Zenimax/Bethesda can still appeal the ruling, but I'm very happy." Persson added, "We never meant to infringe on anything Bethesda does, and this means we didn't." This ruling will allow Mojang to continue to use the Scrolls name while the court case runs its course, unless Bethesda successfully appeals the injunction.

The court case erupted in August when representatives of Zenimax contested that Mojang was infringing on a trademark of the Elder Scrolls series with its upcoming game, Scrolls. Persson suggested the parties settle the dispute with a game of Quake III. In another Twitter post today, Persson said, "No matter how this plays out, we should still do the Quake game."

Zenimax and Bethesda had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment as of press time.

Lord of the Rings Online gets Riders of Rohan expansion this fall

Turbine's latest expansion to free-to-play MMORPG brings new locations, increased level cap, and mounted combat.

In September, Turbine released the Rise of Isengard expansion for its free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game Lord of the Rings Online. That pack added new zones like Dunland, the Gap of Rohan, and Isengard, and it became the best-selling add-on ever for the game. Today, Turbine announced that gamers will be able to continue their journeys through Middle-earth with a new expansion.

The Riders of Rohan add-on--which Turbine says is twice the size of Rise of Isengard--brings new zones, mounted combat, and a level cap increase to 85. It is scheduled to arrive this fall, and Turbine did not affix a price to it.

In the expansion, gamers will join the Rohirrim galloping across the Plains of Rohan; experience the breaking of the Fellowship at Amon Hen; meet the Ents of Fangorn forest; and join up with Eomer, aiding him on his quest to protect King Theoden's people.

As for the expansion's new mounted combat ability, the add-on gives players the ability to mount their steeds and battle from atop the creatures. Using this new ability, players will encounter fresh foes in warg riders, who beset the Plains of Rohan. Additionally, gamers can customize their horse's army and level its skills.

Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar was released in 2007 to a warm critical reception. The game welcomed expansions Mines of Moria in 2008 and Siege of Mirkwood in 2009, before it adopted a free-to-play business model in 2010. The title's Rise of Isengard expansion followed in 2011. Lord of the Rings Online is set in Middle-earth, a fictional fantasy universe created by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Brink developer teases shift in focus

Splash Damage CEO promises upcoming games will explore new platforms, "take full advantage" of industry changes like free-to-play and mobile markets.

Brink developer Splash Damage is looking to make an impact in 2012. In a message to fans today, Splash Damage CEO Paul Wedgwood said this would be "the most significant year" in the studio's decade-long history and teased some changes to the way the company makes and sells its wares.

"We'll be revealing new titles, both on platforms we've previously visited (including the PC and the world's leading consoles), as well as exploring spaces completely new to us," Wedgewood said. "Finally, we've got some special things planned to take full advantage of the changes our industry is experiencing."

Earlier in his letter, Wedgwood had discussed the changes the industry has undergone in the past decade, saying, "We can now play multiplayer games online no matter what the platform is. Thanks to the wonders of digital distribution, we can buy games directly from their developers and play them immediately. Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are more widespread than ever before, and these let us play wherever we are. More recently, the rise of good free-to-play games has allowed players to get their feet wet without demanding a big investment upfront."

Wedgwood said the company has a number of significant announcements planned over "the coming weeks and months."

Splash Damage got its start as a mod team creating maps for Quake 3. Although it has since become a proper studio, Splash Damage has retained an emphasis on multiplayer-focused first-person shooters, developing Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and Brink.

Warp: To Kill or Not to Kill?

There are a lot of games featuring aliens on the various download services, as well as a lot of action puzzlers. So for an alien-centric action puzzler to capture your attention these days means it's got to bring some style and personality to the table. From what I've seen, Warp - coming to PC, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live later this year - does just that...
