Battlefield studio seeking anti-cheat security expert

Swedish developer DICE hiring security expert to help company "secure the online experience" of its games.

Battlefield developer DICE is taking up arms against cheating in its games. The studio has created a new position dedicated entirely to implementing and managing anti-cheat measures for its present and future titles.

The company is now seeking an anti-cheat administrator to join the company at its office in Stockholm, Sweden. According to the requisition description, the person chosen for the job will work to "secure the online experience" for DICE games.

Additionally, this person will be tasked with keeping track of player behavior data in DICE's titles in an effort to keep its game's leaderboards "filled with fair play."

DICE has publicly expressed contempt for cheaters within its games before. Earlier this month the developer said it was ramping up its anti-cheat measures within Battlefield 3, encouraging players to report any instances of misconduct they encounter.

iPhone most popular dev platform in UK - Report

UK developers favour iPhone over traditional handhelds; iPad development also on the rise.

Sixty-one percent of UK developers are making games for Apple's iPhone, according to a report by the UK games industry trade association TIGA. The iPhone is now the most popular development platform in the UK, closely followed by the PC with 59 percent of developers making games for it. The findings will be a blow to Nintendo and Sony, whose DS and PSP platforms command a smaller percentage of UK development--despite having been on the market much longer--at 29 and 36 percent respectively.

The findings come as part of a report from UK games industry trade body TIGA, which surveyed its 170 members. The report also found that in its two short years on the market, the iPad commands a following of 48 percent of UK developers. Though no separate figures were given for Android devices, a combined figure of 34 percent of developers make games for non-Apple mobiles and PDAs.

Since its launch in 2007, the iPhone has risen in popularity as a gaming device, along with the iPod Touch and the iPad. At an Apple press conference on Tuesday, the company revealed that it has sold more than 250 million iOS devices, also proclaiming that the iPod Touch is the number one handheld gaming platform in the world.

Recent findings from mobile analytics firm Distimo found that games represent the largest single app category on Apple App Store, accounting for half of the downloads of both free and paid apps. It also discovered that more than five million games a day were downloaded in the US and six European territories during March 2011, with users downloading an average of 2.5 games per month.

Layoffs strike id Software

Bethesda Softworks rep confirms redundancies at Texas developer, says future projects continue "unabated."

The new year has arrived alongside some bad news for some at Texas-based studio id Software. A representative from parent company Bethesda Softworks confirmed with GameSpot today that the studio recently enacted a round of layoffs.

"As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio," read a line from the statement provided to GameSpot. "As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go. id is still recruiting and hiring qualified developers, and development work on future id titles continues unabated."

The last release from id Software was Rage, a first-person shooter that was released in October and won generally favorable marks with reviewers. That game went on to become October's fourth best-selling title in a month that saw the release of high-profile games like Battlefield 3, Forza Motorsport 4, and Batman: Arkham City.

Currently, the developer is working on Doom 4, which id Software denied as being "indefinitely postponed," as an October rumor suggested.

King Arthur II First Look Preview - Magical Redesign

We take our first look at this medieval real-time strategy game and discover a few tweaks to its warfare formula.

King Arthur can't catch a break. In King Arthur - The Role-playing Wargame, he bested the forces of evil and united Southern Britannia. In this real-time strategy sequel, he gets stabbed in the gut with a magic knife. OK, maybe it doesn't happen exactly like that, but he does suffer a supernatural wound at the hands of the Witch Queen. To make matters worse, she summons a horde of demons to ravage the lands and throw the realms into chaos. Just great. King Arthur II is divided between two extensive campaigns, and it's now your charge to restore order to both the northern and southern halves of the empire. Of course, your definition of "order" could be different from someone else's definition.

Our demonstration began with diplomacy--murder diplomacy. In the example we saw, our hero helped the son of a noble family murder his own father so that he could seize control. However, we also made sure that his next of kin saw the act and could blow the whistle if the son got out of line. This little episode worked to our advantage later in the game when we were trying to become governor. To do so, we needed to speak before the senate and obtain the majority vote from the noble families. The murderous son already owned us one, so we got an easy vote. But we didn't get the majority. Naturally, it was time for war.

King Arthur II is divided into two sections: the map screen and the battle screen. On the map screen, we could craft items, manage our armies, visit towns, and partake in all other manner of adventuring flair. The battle screen is where we got down and dirty. The first battle we saw was a stronghold assault that looked like a scene straight out of Total War: Shogun II. Had we actually proceeded, it would have been a very challenging fight because the defensive enemies were not only hiding behind three walls, but they were also atop high elevation, which means they received bonuses when firing or charging downhill.

We also got a peek at some of King Arthur II's flying units. These nasty, demonic critters could only be harmed with spells and arrows while in the air. Sometimes they would touch down and take a few melee swipes at our troops, which granted our men the chance to work their blades. The developers described the battle system as a rock-paper-scissors relationship among all the units. Later in the demonstration, we got our hands on the game and tested our tactical prowess against some giants. Because our strategy began and ended with "RUSH THE GIANTS," we didn't fair well initially. However, with smart positioning of our archers and liberal use of the slow spell on the giants, we managed to bring them down before they could trample all of our troops.

We also learned that the magic system from the first King Arthur has been reworked so that it is less overwhelming. Now, each side has a magical shield that is broken down into four levels. The offensive spell will need to be above the defensive shield level to have any effect. If it's not, well, poof, and it's gone. Magical shields will degenerate over time, but they can be restored though various means. One of those is to capture certain strategic points on the map. In addition to extra shielding, these points can confer new spells or other bonuses. Stronger spells also have long casting times and can be interrupted if, for instance, your caster takes an arrow to the face.

Had we kept playing, the surviving units would have likely leveled up. When a hero unit levels up, it's a big deal. Whether you're using a warlord, champion, or sage, the units will each have an upgradeable skill tree broken into two branches. The first is unique to that unit and reflects how totally awesome it is with a personalized set of spells and abilities. The second branch is specific to the unit type--as mentioned earlier--and is common to all units of that type. Non-hero units also gain levels, which lets you increase their stats.

King Arthur II is still a single-player-only adventure and will be released on PCs in January of next year. When asked, the developers also noted that they would like to have a special bonus included for players with an original King Arthur save, but nothing has been finalized.

FIFA 12 scores six weeks at top of UK chart

EA Sports' football title spends all of January in the number one position on the UK chart, holding off new entry Resident Evil: Revelations.

There was good news for EA in the UK this week, as FIFA 12 held on to the number one spot of the UK all-formats chart for the sixth week in a row. The publisher's first-person shooter Battlefield 3 holds firm at five, but fellow first-person shooter Modern Warfare 3 jumped from four to two. This reshuffle has lead to Skyrim and Just Dance 3 dropping down one place each, with Rage and Rayman Origins both falling out of the top 10 altogether.

Price drops have allowed well-travelled assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze to make a reappearance in the top 10. His latest outing, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, switched positions with Rayman Origins this week, going from 12 to nine.

New to the chart is 3DS exclusive Resident Evil: Revelations, which was released last week to positive reviews. Capcom's latest in the survival horror franchise landed straight in at number six, scoring the seventh highest 3DS launch to date. The only other newcomer to the chart this week was the latest Sims 3 expansion pack, Master Suite Stuff, which jumped straight in at 23.

UK All-Formats Chart for Week Ending 28 January 2012:
1. FIFA 12
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
3. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
4. Just Dance 3
5. Battlefield 3
6. Resident Evil: Revelations
7. Zumba Fitness
8. Saints Row: The Third
9. Assassin's Creed: Revelations
10. Zumba Fitness 2

Minecraft Lego campaign under way

Mojang uses Lego Cuusoo service in attempt to get official set produced, plans to donate all royalties to charity.

Minecraft now sits at over 4 million copies sold, and a host of merchandise baring its characters and aesthetic style is already available. Looking to expand upon the range of Minecraft-related products already available, Mojang has started a campaign to have an official Lego Minecraft set produced under the Lego Cuusoo label.

The Lego Cuusoo label program is similar in execution to Kickstarter. It allows people to pitch ideas for Lego sets, and if the idea gets enough support from the community--10,000 votes--it will be reviewed by Lego. If the set is then approved for production, the creator will receive 1 percent royalties of all sales.

Several Minecraft-related Lego Cuusoo projects have been started, with users koalaexpert and suparMacho's ideas breaking out as among the most popular. Mojang reached out to these creators, and the individuals have agreed to collaborate on the official Minecraft Lego Cuusoo project and donate all royalties to charity.

"Seeing Lego Minecraft sets is also our dream, so we linked to one of the projects," a Mojang spokesperson said on the project's Cuusoo idea page. "It's clear to us that there are many creative people with good ideas for this and we want to throw our own hat into the ring and start this project to bring the best Lego Minecraft builders together. Minecraft is about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine in the virtual world. You can build anything you imagine with Lego bricks in the physical world. Minecraft and Lego were meant to be together."

The current supporter count for Lego Minecraft sits at just north of 2,000. Mojang said that it will continue to look for the best Minecraft-related ideas to join its own efforts.

Next Xbox to play Blu-rays, block used games - Report

Microsoft's Xbox 360 successor will supposedly use high-capacity discs, smaller controller, and Kinect 2; could keep gamers from playing secondhand games.

Speculation over the next generation of consoles--specifically Microsoft's Next Xbox--has spread like fire as of late. The latest hearsay suggests the processing chip for Microsoft next console is already in production, with debug kits available to game studios as soon as April. Now, new light has been shed on Microsoft's Next Xbox, the latest word suggesting it could play Blu-ray discs, block users from playing used games, and introduce the Kinect 2.

According to "games industry sources" speaking with Kotaku, the Next Xbox will use Blu-ray as its disc technology, an upgrade from the DVD drive the Xbox 360 currently sports. Sony's PlayStation 3 supports Blu-Ray, and it has since it was first launched in 2006. Blu-ray disc capacity is significantly greater than that of DVD.

Additionally, a "reliable industry source" tells Kotaku that Microsoft's Next Xbox may incorporate a system that blocks gamers from playing used titles. Further details concerning the implementation of such a system were not offered.

Further, a source familiar with Microsoft's plans told the blog that the company will ship the Next Xbox with an updated version of the full-body gesture-recognition technology Kinect. According to Kotaku's source, this new iteration of the Kinect will contain an onboard processor for greater motion detection, a feature that was supposedly considered for the first Kinect.

Lastly, the gaming blog reports that Microsoft is "interested" in creating a smaller controller for the Next Xbox. Further details on this controller were not made available.

A Microsoft spokesperson told GameSpot, "As an innovator, we're always thinking about what is next and how we can push the boundaries of technology like we did with Kinect. We believe the key to extending the lifespan of a console is not just about the console hardware, but about the games and entertainment experiences being delivered to consumers. Beyond that, we don't comment on rumors or speculation."

The Xbox 360 is Microsoft's second home console, following the original Xbox. The Xbox 360 was released in North America in November 2005 and has gone on to sell 66 million units worldwide. The Kinect has shipped 18 million units worldwide since it was launched during the holiday 2010 season.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning dev recommends install on Xbox 360

"For the love of God, please install," advises fantasy game's lead designer, saying it solves problem of lengthy load times.

Installing Xbox 360 games to the system's hard drive to shorten load times is a standard option, but in the case of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the designer might prefer it to be an ultimatum.

Speaking with OXM, Big Huge Games' Ian Frazier said, "If you have a hard drive, for the love of God, please install."

"You will have much, much smaller load screens," he added. "Please, please, for the love of all that's holy, install."

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will be the first game released from 38 Studios, a shop founded by former Major League Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling. It is set to launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on February 7 in North America. The fantasy-themed role-playing game will feature a number of genre staples, from skeleton warriors and cave trolls to swords and sorcery.

Shippin' Out Jan. 29-Feb. 4: Final Fantasy XIII-2, SoulCalibur V

New release slate led by Square Enix's role-playing sequel and Namco Bandai's fighting game; Rebellion's NeverDead and Mac version of BioShock 2 also out.

The past two weeks didn't feature many big-ticket items on the new release schedule, but this week makes up for lost time. New titles out this week include Final Fantasy XIII-2, SoulCalibur V, NeverDead, and the Mac version of BioShock 2.

Out in front is Final Fantasy XIII-2 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 from Square Enix. The game is a direct sequel to 2010's well-received Final Fantasy XIII. It sees the return of Final Fantasy XIII protagonist Lightning, but focuses much more on her now-liberated sister Serah.

Also out this week on the Xbox 360 and PS3 is Namco Bandai's fighting game SoulCalibur V. The publisher has slated 30 characters for inclusion, and the series' tradition of including guest characters from other games will continue, with Ezio from Assassin's Creed confirmed to be joining the mix.

Another major new release out this week is Rebellion's action game NeverDead for the Xbox 360 and PS3. The game puts players in the shoes of Bryce Boltzmann, an immortal demon slayer who is prone to dismemberment. Jumping into the fray is encouraged here, as losing limbs can let players roll into previously inaccessible areas, and the severed appendages can be wielded as weapons or reattached to regain full mobility.

Lastly, BioShock 2 comes to the Mac this week. Ported by Feral Interactive, the game takes place 10 years after the events of the first BioShock game. Players return to Rapture, but this time they control a prototype version of the original's lumbering Big Daddy.

For further details, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

Tuesday, January 31:
BioShock 2--Mac--Feral Interactive
Final Fantasy XIII-2--PS3, X360--Square Enix
NeverDead--PS3, X360--Konami
Puddle--PS3--Konami
SoulCalibur V--PS3, X360--Namco Bandai

Wednesday, February 1:

Minecraft Lego sets approved

Lego kits based on Mojang's sandbox game pass review; concept that "celebrates best aspects" of Lego and Minecraft now being developed.

Last month, Minecraft studio Mojang launched a campaign through Lego's Cuussoo label to have a set based on the game enter production. The project gathered the required 10,000 supporters, and was sent to review in late December. Now, the Lego jury has reached a decision, voting to green-light the initiative.

Though the Minecraft Lego set has been approved, it's not ready to be released just yet. Next up in the process is creating a concept for the project. Writing on the Cuusoo blog, Lego said, "We are now developing a concept that celebrates the best aspects of building with the Lego system and in Minecraft."

According to Lego, "These things take time, so we appreciate your patience." The company said more details about the Lego Minecraft sets will be shared at a later date. For more on Minecraft, check out GameSpot's review.

GTAIII: Anniversary Edition goes mobile December 15

Rockstar readying updated release of PS2 open-world crime game for Android and iOS platforms; $5 price point confirmed.

The PlayStation 2's seminal Grand Theft Auto III turned 10 years old in October, and developer Rockstar celebrated the anniversary by confirming it would be bringing the open-world crime game to mobile platforms. Rockstar followed that up today with more specific details, confirming that Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition will be coming to Android and iOS on December 15 for $5.

The mobile port of GTAIII isn't the only Rockstar recognition of the game's anniversary. The company is also peddling a $150 limited-edition Claude action figure: a 1:6 scale articulated dress-up replica of the game's protagonist, complete with Liberty City prison jumpsuit and classic ensemble (cargo pants and bomber jacket with "working zippers"). His tiny plastic arsenal comprises a baseball bat, grenades, knife, pistol, sniper rifle, and assault rifle.

Initially revealed in October, the mobile edition of GTAIII was set to support only the highest end of mobile hardware, but the list of supported phones and tablets has since expanded to include a wider range of devices.

Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition-supported mobile devices:

Apple iOS devices: iPad 1 and 2, iPhone 4 and 4S, iPod Touch fourth generation

Android phones: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x

Android tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive

Minecraft convention hitting Las Vegas Nov. 18-19

Indie hit creator Markus Persson tells PC Gamer MineCon will land in Sin City this fall to coincide with full launch of game.

Indie hit Minecraft was created just two years ago by Markus Persson AKA "Notch." In that time, it has grown wildly. The game--which is still in beta--has passed 10 million registered users, is spreading to the Xbox 360 later this year, and will be part of the Smithsonian's Art of Games exhibit. Now, the game is expanding further with a dedicated convention this November.

PC Gamer today is reporting that a Minecraft convention called MineCon will be held at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from November 18-19. It will coincide with the full launch of Minecraft from Notch's studio, Mojang. The convention's registration site will open next week with tickets and a full event schedule available.

"For me, MineCon is about celebrating the full release of Minecraft," Notch told PC Gamer. "I'm really looking forward to getting up on stage and pushing the button to upload the final build."

Additionally, Notch made it clear that Minecraft's launch won't signal the end of Mojang's work on the title.

"We'll just go back home and keep working on Minecraft directly after MineCon," he said. "But it does represent a huge milestone where the game finally leaves beta, something we'd never be able to do without our fans, so it feels natural to celebrate it with them."

MineCon will join other specialty game conventions happening in the coming months, including QuakeCon 2011 (August 4-7) Call of Duty XP (September 2-3), and BlizzCon 2011 (October 21-22). For more on Minecraft, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
