Ridge Racer Unbounded Review

Let's get it out of the way at the top of the show. Ridge Racer Unbounded is Ridge Racer in name only. This game has about as much in common with Ridge Racer as Forza 4, or Hot Pursuit, or any other racer you'd care to name. As such, you can forget about ludicrously over-the-top powerslide mechanics...

Microsoft grabs Xbox FL domains

Redmond, Washington-based Xbox maker picks up Web address related to Xbox FL; domains redirect to Microsoft's search engine Bing.

Rumors from mystery sources about the next Xbox have been swirling as of late, but now Microsoft itself has added to the rumor mill. As spotted by Fusible, Microsoft has acquired the domain names www.XboxFL.com and www.XboxFL.net.

Both domain names redirect users to a Web search for "Xbox FL" through Microsoft's Bing search engine. As of press time, Microsoft had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

Earlier this week, blogger MS Nerd suggested Microsoft was preparing a stripped-down Xbox, which would run Arcade games and Kinect apps and retail for around $100.

Shippin' Out March 18-24: Kid Icarus 3DS

Nintendo's angelic adventurer leads a formation full of new releases at retailers, including Ninja Gaiden 3, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, Armored Core V.

It has been more than 20 years since the last original Kid Icarus game was released. That drought ends this week, as Nintendo's cherubic mascot Pit makes his 3DS debut in Kid Icarus: Uprising on the 3DS. However, Kid Icarus is by no means flying solo on the new release shelves this week, as new installments in the Resident Evil and Ninja Gaiden series lead up a deep slate of notable debuts.

As with previous Kid Icarus games, Uprising sees Pit taking on the evil Medusa, although this new iteration will feature him fighting the forces of evil in the skies as well as on land. Additionally, the game features a multiplayer mode where up to six 3DS owners can take each other on in teams of three. The game will also come bundled with a 3DS stand to let players focus on playing the system without worrying about holding it up.

Pit isn't the only gaming celebrity receiving a new title, as Ryu Hayabusa returns in Ninja Gaiden 3. The latest entry in Team Ninja's action series adds a few new elements to the formula, including competitive and cooperative online multiplayer for up to eight players. The PS3 version of the game will also feature PlayStation Move support, which Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi has said is intended to "bring players closer to" Hayabusa.

Capcom has another zombie hunting game on tap for consumers in the form of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Developed by Slant Six, Operation Raccoon City offers a squad-based shooter take on Capcom's seminal survival horror series. The game puts players in control of a half-dozen special commandos employed by The Umbrella Corporation, the sinister pharmaceutical company whose unethical experiments caused the series' rash of zombie outbreaks in the first place.

Another long-running Japanese series returns this week as From Software and Namco Bandai launch Armored Core V. The game maintains the franchise's focus on high-octane mech combat and comprehensive customization options, although this installment features smaller mechs to encourage tactical gameplay. From Software has focused on delivering more content this time around by incorporating new environments and enhancing the game's offline mode. Online modes will also be available, and they'll emphasize large-scale, team-based battles.

Skyrim suited for free-to-play, says ex-Battlefield dev

Former Battlefield Heroes manager says Bethesda RPG's systems translate well to microtransaction business model, is "100 percent confident" such a game will launch in coming years.

A free-to-play equivalent of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will ship in the next few years, former Battlefield Heroes and Battlefield Play4Free manager Ben Cousins said this week. Speaking at the Free-2-Play Summit in London (via Gamesindustry.biz), Cousins said the game systems of Skyrim would translate well to a free-to-play offering.

"I am totally 100 percent confident--I will bet large amounts of money--that we will have, in the next few years, a free-to-play equivalent of Skyrim," Cousins said. "A game like Skyrim, where you accrue skills and equipment over time, that you can play for hundreds of hours, is actually one of the easiest games to develop for a free-to-play model. That would be a big hit."

Cousins--who now heads up mobile game shop Ngmoco in Sweden--elaborated further, saying that almost all new games will sport free-to-play business models in the time ahead.

"In the future I believe free-to-play will be the way that nearly everyone plays games," he said. "It will be nearly every genre, and it will be nearly every platform."

The free-to-play market has proven attractive for a number of studios. Earlier this week, Syndicate developer Starbreeze revealed a new free-to-play project. Additionally, Guerrilla Games made the multiplayer component of Killzone 3 free, and the new Microsoft Flight is also available without an up-front purchase.
