Grand Slam Tennis 2 rounds the bases February 14

EA Sports' racket sim sequel dated; Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova to share cover space with John McEnroe.

Electronic Arts is serving up love-love for Valentine's Day. The publisher today detailed release plans for its upcoming Grand Slam Tennis 2, saying the game would hit store shelves in North America on February 14, preceded by international launches on February 10. (A Japanese launch is expected later in 2012.)

Beyond the release dates, EA detailed region-specific cover athletes for the game. Most countries will see John McEnroe, Novak Djokovic, and Maria Sharapova adorning the box front, but gamers in France, Spain, and Germany will be getting different covers tailored to their tastes. Rafael Nadal will replace McEnroe on the Spanish and French box art, with the latter design also ditching Sharapova in favor of Jo-Wilfred Tsonga. Germany's cover will keep Sharapova, but the Russian star will be accompanied on that box art by Teutonic tennis legend Boris Becker and Roger Federer.

As the name suggests, Grand Slam Tennis 2 will feature all four of the sport's biggest championships: the French Open, the Australian Open, the U.S. Open, and Wimbledon, which will be exclusive to EA Sports' game. Grand Slam Tennis 2 will also feature more than 20 past and present pros, including the cover athletes, Bjorn Borg, and Serena and Venus Williams.

While this will be the first appearance for the series on the Microsoft and Sony systems, its debut is long overdue. In 2009, EA Sports announced that the original Grand Slam Tennis would be released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 a few months after it surfaced on the Wii (where it accompanied the Wii MotionPlus launch alongside Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10). However, the Wii version of the game underperformed, and the high-definition versions were delayed and eventually canceled.
