Rocksteady's well-received Caped Crusader action title helps Warner Bros. game/film sector surge 9 percent to $12.6 billion.
Batman: Arkham City is continuing to be a big hit for publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. As part of its parent publisher Time Warner's full-year 2011 financial report, the company said Batman: Arkham City has now shipped 6 million units worldwide since its launch in October.
Time Warner's Filmed Entertainment business, which houses its game development unit, saw revenues rise 9 percent to $12.6 billion during its fiscal year ended December 31, 2011. The company said revenues benefited from a "stronger" game release slate and called out the aforementioned Batman: Arkham City, as well as Mortal Kombat and "several" Lego titles as "key" contributors to its bottom line.
The company has not revealed specific sell-through figures for the Caped Crusader title, but the first-week shipment tally for the game stood at 4.6 million. The NPD Group placed the game as the seventh-best selling title at US retailers in 2011.
Additionally, Arkham City was by-mail game rental company GameFly's most-requested title of 2011, beating out the year's best-selling title, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Finally, Arkham City has been nominated for two Game Developers Choice awards, including Game of the Year and Best Game Design. That award show is part of the annual Game Developers Conference and will be held on March 7 at 6:30 p.m. PT.
